Royal Opera House Design & Make 2019/20 Swan Lake

Sign up for this year’s FREE Design and Make competition and inspire your class to become budding ballet set designers!

Design and Make is an entirely FREE Royal Opera House national learning programme and competition for KS2 and is aligned to the National Curriculum framework for Design & technology.

Children are introduced to a ballet from the Royal Ballet repertory and inspired by this, develop their own design concept for their set, following a live brief from Royal Ballet Director Kevin O’Hare to realise a final design. They will:

  • Explore practical modelling skills, designing and making in 3D, improving skills such as manual dexterity, concentration and perseverance.
  • Produce a sketchbook of their research-led ideas, developing skills of personal expression and visual literacy as they work towards a final model box for a scene in the ballet.
  • Access the Maths and Science curriculum by learning how to work in scale and solve problems using a range of materials.
  • Develop their speaking and listening skills by presenting their work to their peers, reflecting and justifying their design choices.

Teachers attend a FREE CPD session to inspire delivery of the programme with hints, tips and take away classroom activities from a professional stage designer.

The project runs across the spring term, with a 10-lesson scheme of work presented in 10 lesson plans with a range of online resources on the ROH Learning Platform.

In the Spring term, teachers select their winning entries and submit them for judging by a panel of professional designers and makers at ROH. The overall national winners are invited to ROH Covent Garden with their class for a celebration of their achievement.
