A little further afield, Stowe Gardens, a National Trust property in Buckinghamshire are looking for an artist to facilitate workshops for a project called ‘Aren’t We Worthy?’ to celebrate 100 years since women received the vote.

The project will celebrate the achievements and influence of women in society by offering a modern interpretation of an 18th century temple in the gardens – The Temple of British Worthies. Designed in 1734, it features busts of 16 historic figures, 15 men and one woman (Queen Elizabeth I) who were denoted as worthy by Lord Cobham when he created his garden. The intention is to create a counterpoint to the temple to shine a light on 15 worthy women selected by the public and community groups and on one worthy man selected by the team at Stowe.

The deadline for expressions of interest was actually 25 June but they are still keen to hear from artists who might be interested.

They’re looking for artists with experience of socially engaged practice to support our volunteers to produce the exhibits. The artists will be contracted to guide volunteers through the creative process from developing ideas to the producing good quality exhibits for display in the garden. They anticipate this will require 5 days commitment in the form of preparation time, consultation sessions with volunteers and creative workshops. Stowe Gardens would expect the artist to lead and facilitate this process. The selected artist may be required to be filmed and photographed as part of marketing for the project.

Stowe Gardens intend to display 16 Perspex boxes, each set on a plinth, in the garden during September and October – each box will contain artefacts or artistic creations that reflect the character of one of the selected people. They are looking for support to create 9 of these boxes (representing 8 women and 1 man) by a completion date of Friday 24 August.

Budget
